Voting documentation is changing - make sure you can vote
It’s so important that unpaid carers can use their vote.
You may have heard that the Government has introduced a requirement for voters to show photo ID when voting at a polling station at some elections.
This new requirement will apply for the first time at the local elections taking place in some areas of England on Thursday 4 May.
Going forward, the requirement will apply to general elections from October 2023, and to UK Parliament by-elections and recall petitions from May 2023.
It’s vital that unpaid carers have a say – and crucial that you can vote.
Documents required
The Electoral Commission has produced a simple guide that outlines the changes and explains what documents you can use.
Additional help for different groups
Some groups may not have the obvious documents (like passport or driving licence), and others will have questions re ID, and the Electoral Commission has produced special guides for them, including for older people, the GRT community and for those who are trans and non-binary.
And if you are, or know a young carer, who’s only recently eligible to vote, please let them know about these changes, as they too may be less likely to have the documentation required easily available.
